My role was art direction and graphic design. Our mission was to elevate an already-in-progress campaign to the next level. Using existing colorway combos, running photo assets, product assets, a tagline, and a subhead as our foundation, we crafted the "RUN SMOOTH" type lock-up, seamlessly paired with the Clifton 10 wordmark, subhead, and Hoka logo. To keep things fresh and flexible, we created two distinct asset styles: one spotlighting just the product and typography, and another combining product, typography, and running imagery. We also combined both shoes for a dual-gender approach that speaks to everyone.Once we locked in our layouts, we rolled out a large variety of still and motion digital banners with a similar design approach, plus audio-visual pieces designed to shine across social platforms and the web. So, we spun Shakespeare's timeless dilemma "To be or not to be" into our own catchy tagline that speaks to every rider's spirit: “Slip or to SlipNot.” And just like the captivating aesthetic of the 16th century, our campaign is decked out in visuals that echo that era, blending the old-world charm with the adrenaline-pumping world of mountain biking. To market the Hyperviz Collection, we crafted an original concept for the video and photo shoot. We aimed to recreate an outdoor riding experience within the controlled environment of a photo studio. The tagline "Reflect on Performance" cleverly ties into the collection's emphasis on visibility and safety. Our magazine concept is a delightful blend of vintage Thrasher and Rap magazines, infused with a collage of feminine iconography. It's a creative mash-up that nods to the past while celebrating the allure and power of the future. We played with flowers, checkered patterns, chain swooshes as jewelry, butterflies, sparkles, graphic elements, and embellished borders, reminiscent of those iconic vintage Thrasher magazines. Light The Air Max BTFL Fall 21 campaign focused on capturing the Air collection through exaggerated angles, dynamic framing, and double exposure. Air is synonymous with the history of Nike, and our goal was to breathe the same fresh aesthetic into this iconic technology like last season by doubling down on the double exposure; pun intended. This approach created an array of imagery that revealed multiple and unexpected angles to the viewer. To support the imagery, we used the same graphic lock-up system I initially developed for the previous season with a custom aerosol can brush technique to reflect the product collection, as well as light and airy quality. While Nike does a fantastic job honoring the shoe and its legacy during the Cortez Anniversary, there’s room to take it further. The story of the Nike Cortez is deeply rooted in LA, particularly in its 'Chicano' culture, but its influence stretches far beyond the City of Angels. Paying homage is a great start, but paying respect? That’s where the magic happens. The Nike Cortez isn’t just a sneaker—it’s a cultural icon, a symbol of identity, and a movement with a global footprint. Yet, many within this vibrant community feel overlooked and underrepresented. It’s time to connect with them in a way that’s as bold and unapologetic as the Cortez itself, embracing it not just as a popular sneaker but as a cultural emblem. Its roots in America trace back to Mexico City, where it adorned street signs, birth certificates, diplomas, and awards, eventually spreading across Latin America through hand-painted signs. "Olde English" has become a cornerstone of Chicano street art, seamlessly blending with straight lines and script to create the bold murals and graffiti that define the movement. At the heart of this culture is LA’s legendary Felix Chevrolet dealership. Founded in 1922, it became a cultural landmark when it adopted Felix the Cat as its mascot in 1957, cementing its place in lowrider history. Now, imagine infusing the Nike Cortez with lowrider culture—combining original Chevy colors with the Cortez and bringing it to life through the Nike by You paint booth.
